Stairlift Installation: What to Expect
Planning a stairlift or chair lift installation? This guide explains how the staircase is assessed, what your quote should clarify, how the rail and chair are fitted, how long installation may take, and what should happen before the installer leaves.
Every staircase and household is different. A professional assessment is used to confirm the stairlift type, rail configuration, available space and installation requirements. If the person’s ability to transfer into the seat or operate the lift is uncertain, ask an appropriate occupational therapist or healthcare professional for individual guidance.
How Are Stairlifts Installed?
A professional stairlift installation normally begins with an assessment and accurate staircase measurements. The rail is then positioned and supported by brackets secured to the stair treads rather than attached directly to the wall. The chair or carriage is fitted to the rail, the applicable power arrangement is set up, and the complete route is tested before the user demonstration.
The exact process depends on the staircase, rail and selected model. One uninterrupted flight may use a standard straight rail. A staircase with a turn, curve or intermediate landing normally requires a custom curved rail measured for that route.
What are the stairlift installation requirements?
The assessment should establish whether a particular stairlift and rail configuration may be compatible with the staircase and available space. Common checks include:
- whether the staircase is straight or includes turns and landings;
- stair width, length, angle and number of steps;
- space at the upper and lower landings;
- doors, radiators, handrails, trim and other obstructions;
- possible rail, stopping and parking positions;
- indoor or outdoor exposure;
- the power requirement for the selected model;
- the user’s height, weight and seating considerations relevant to product fit; and
- whether an existing stairlift must be removed first.
Before the first conversation, have your city or postal code, staircase shape, indoor or outdoor location and any new or pre-owned preference ready. Clear photographs from the top, bottom and side can help identify obvious layout questions, but photographs alone do not prove final compatibility.
What should a stairlift installation quote include?
A written quote should clearly identify:
- whether the stairlift is new or pre-owned;
- the manufacturer, model and straight, curved or outdoor configuration;
- the rail layout and selected standard or optional features;
- whether delivery and professional installation are included;
- any known electrical or other preparation work and whether it is included or separate;
- removal of an existing unit, when applicable;
- the expected order and installation timing; and
- the exact warranty, labour, service and aftercare terms that apply to that unit.
Any work or charge outside the quoted scope should be identified before the order is approved. For general planning ranges and the factors that affect price, see the 2026 stairlift price guide.
How should you prepare for installation day?
1. Clear loose objects from the stairs and nearby landings.
2. Make sure the installation team can reach the working area and proposed power location.
3. Keep pets and unnecessary foot traffic away from the staircase during the appointment.
4. Arrange for the person using the lift, or a supporting family member, to attend the demonstration where practical.
5. Write down questions about the controls, parking, charging where applicable and ongoing support.
Do not remove carpet, alter a handrail or arrange electrical work unless the assessment identifies a specific requirement.
Six professional stairlift installation steps
- 1
Confirm the Staircase and Installation Plan
The installer confirms the measurements, rail position, selected equipment and intended stopping or parking locations. Doorways, landings and clearance issues should be resolved before the rail is secured.
- 2
Position and Secure the Rail
The rail supports are positioned and secured using the method specified for the selected system and staircase. Stairlift rails are commonly supported by brackets fixed to the stair treads, although the exact arrangement depends on the product and site.
- 3
Fit the Chair or Carriage
The chair or carriage is fitted to the rail and adjusted for the selected setup. Folding, swivel, footrest or powered features are checked where they are included with that model.
- 4
Set Up the Applicable Power System
For battery-powered models, the charging arrangement is connected and checked according to the selected model’s requirements. If a new outlet, relocated outlet or other electrical work is required, it should be identified before installation.
- 5
Test and Adjust the Stairlift
The stairlift is tested along its complete route. The installer checks the controls, stopping positions and features included with the selected model. These may include call/send controls, a seat belt, swivel or folding equipment, obstruction sensors and charging contacts where fitted.
- 6
Complete the Demonstration and Handoff
The installation team completes the final test, cleans the work area and demonstrates the stairlift to the user or supporting family member. The customer should have time to practise the basic operation, ask questions and confirm how to contact The Stairlift Store for support.
How long does stairlift installation take?
There are two different timelines: the time from assessment or order to the appointment, and the time spent installing the lift in the home.
Straight stairlift timing
When the staircase has been assessed, the correct straight stairlift and rail are available, and no additional preparation is required, The Stairlift Store’s usual installation time is approximately two hours. A practical industry planning range is about two to four hours when the staircase, options or site require more work.
When compatible straight equipment is in stock, installation may be scheduled within a few days of the initial consultation. Availability and the confirmed installation schedule should appear in the quote rather than being treated as a universal guarantee.
Curved stairlift timing
Curved stairlifts normally take longer because the rail follows turns, curves or landings. The on-site appointment often takes roughly half a day; an industry planning range of four to eight hours or more may apply depending on the rail design, route length, number of turns, selected features and site conditions.
The order-to-install period is separate. A custom curved rail may require approximately two to four weeks for measuring, preparation or manufacturing, depending on the selected system and availability. The assessment and written quote should provide the job-specific estimate.
Outdoor, multi-level and pre-owned installations can also require additional preparation or compatibility checks.
What changes for straight, curved, outdoor and pre-owned stairlifts?
Straight Stairlifts
A straight stairlift normally uses a standard rail for one uninterrupted flight. The assessment still needs to confirm rail length, width, landing clearance, obstructions and the selected model’s fit.
Compare straight stairliftsCurved Stairlifts
Stairs with bends, turns or intermediate landings normally require a rail measured and produced for that staircase. This adds a custom measurement and preparation stage before installation.

An outdoor installation requires equipment intended for exterior use. The assessment should consider the stair or mounting surface, weather exposure, drainage, landing space and the selected model’s power arrangement.

A pre-owned stairlift must be assessed for condition, parts support, rail compatibility and fit at the new staircase. Straight rails may sometimes be reusable when compatible. A custom curved rail should not be assumed to fit another staircase.

This Brampton staircase required a curved route rather than a standard straight rail. During the assessment, the staircase was measured and a custom rail was planned to follow its shape and the available space at the upper and lower ends.
The Stairlift Store has installed 1,000+ stairlifts across the GTA. This Brampton project is one example of that local installation experience.
The two original project photographs show the custom rail following the staircase and the completed stairlift parked beside the upper landing. This is why a curved stairlift should not be selected from an online photograph alone: the rail must be configured for the actual staircase.

Separate published customer experience: Rick and Elaine Gunther described receiving a quote for a straight stairlift, having it installed within a couple of hours, and receiving a demonstration afterward.

Will installation affect the walls, stairs or power supply?
Walls, stair treads and carpet
Because the rail is commonly supported by brackets secured to the stair treads, major wall work is often unnecessary. The installation normally leaves fixing points in the treads where the brackets are attached. Existing carpet can often remain, but the installer should confirm this for the selected model, floor covering and stair condition.
Power requirements
Battery-powered stairlifts still need the charging arrangement specified for the selected model. A nearby household outlet is commonly used, with a low-voltage connection routed to the lift. Do not assume every indoor or outdoor site has identical requirements; confirm any necessary preparation during the assessment.
What warranty and first-year service coverage applies?
New and pre-owned stairlifts supplied and installed by The Stairlift Store include a lifetime warranty on the motor, gearbox and rail, plus free service calls during the first year from the installation date.
“Free service calls” should not be interpreted as a universal promise that every repair, replacement part or labour charge is free. The written quote should state the warranty and service terms that apply to the selected unit.
If a stairlift develops a problem, call The Stairlift Store. The team may first try to identify a simple issue by phone. A more complex fault may require an in-home visit and replacement parts.
Can you install a stairlift yourself?
Stairlift installation should be handled professionally. Accurate measurements, secure rail placement, the correct model-specific power setup, stopping-position adjustments, testing and a user demonstration all affect how the equipment operates.
This guide intentionally does not provide fastening, electrical or calibration instructions. Incorrect installation may affect fit, operation, warranty or future serviceability.
